The Basilica of St. John Lateran is the cathedral of the Diocese of Rome and the residence of the Pope's vicar for Rome; it is the official ecclesiastical seat of the Pope, having the cathedra of the Bishop of Rome, i.e. the Pope. It is also the first of the four papal basilicas and the oldest and most important church in the West. Until the capture of Rome by the Italian army in 1870 , the coronation of the Pope took place there, then in moved to St. Peter. In the Basilica of St. John is celebrated on Holy Thursday , the ritual of "washing of the feet" in which the Pope washes the feet of some of the faithful to remember the gesture made by Jesus Christ with the Twelve Holy Apostles at the Last Supper. In 2013, Pope Francis broke the tradition of celebrating the rite in the juvenile prison in Casal del Marmo. Until the fourteenth century, the adjacent buildings, reconstructed at a later date, however, were the official residence of the Pope. Following, they continued to be used as a papal residence together with the Apostolic Palace in the Vatican and then the Quirinale Palace which was the official residence until 1870. In the Palaces of the Lateran it was signed on February 11, 1929, the Lateran Treaty ( Conciliation ) between the Kingdom of Italy and the Church that put an end to the "Roman question" arising as a result of the capture of Rome. The Lateran Treaty then led to the official birth of the State of Vatican City.
In the square in front of the church every 1st of May, on the occasion of Labour Day, it is held a concert organized by the major Italian trade unions.
Less than a mile from the St. John Villa, and then a short walk away, there is the Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme, one of the "seven churches" of Rome. The "seven churches" are those that, at one time, the pilgrims who came to Rome were obliged to visit in one day reaching them on foot.
They are:
- St. Peter's
- St. John
- St. Paul Outside the Walls on the Via Ostiense
- Santa Maria Maggiore
- Santa Croce in Gerusalemme
- San Lorenzo al Verano
- St. Sebastian outside the walls on the Appia Antica
The Basilica of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme is of special historical importance , since it is tied to Saint Helen, mother of Emperor Constantine the Great who, with the Edict of Milan, made legal Christian worship in the Roman Empire . The basilica was derived from the old Sessoriano Palace that was the home of Helen. This palace was also , between the late third and early fourth century AD , the residence of the emperors. In 350 A.D. it was transformed into a church, and in it were placed a few relics connected with the crucifixion of Jesus that St. Helena had brought back from his pilgrimage to Palestine. In particular, among them there are parts of the "true cross", the cross of one of the two thieves , the sponge soaked in vinegar , part of the crown of thorns, a nail and the sacred Titulus Crucis ( the inscription INRI placed over the cross).
The special name " Jerusalem " derives from the fact that the floor of the chapel of St. Helen , located in the right side , was once covered with earth from the Holy Land.
